Subculture Study on Coffee Drinkers (Momena Khatoon)

Hello!

This study is on a group of people we know very well; it might even be us! Being an avid coffee drinker myself, I am well aware of the different reasons why someone might drink coffee: drinking to increase productivity, meet new people, or just to enjoy the brisk, bitter taste. It’s a staple of our mornings, and can even play a role throughout our day.

Location: The Coffee Project

The Coffee Project is a small, yet cozy coffee shop situated on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, on the outskirts of the East Village, between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. The warm lighting creates a break from the busy streets of NYC and does mimic the environment of a village very well. Innovative coffee drinks play a role in its popularity among the youth as well, it was a prime location to observe the most avid of coffee drinkers.

Specifically, focusing on people who sit in a corner dubbed “squatters“, these people are often not visible from afar; surrounding by towers of books while vigorously typing away on their computers. They often are seen in coffee shops throughout the day,  a faithful patron, getting up from “makeshift” offices only to get a refill.
